History of Photo: My grandparents lived in
Arbyd in the 1920s. This is a photo of their
farmhouse
.
- Home of: Grandparents: James Elliott
Bishop & wife Alta May Whitlock-Bishop
- Home of: Grandfather's brother &
wife: Louis Barby Bishop & Elsie
Basler-Bishop
- They lived in Arbyrd, Dunklin
County, MO. Louis Barby Bishop and his
brother, Jim.... James Elliott Bishop...
- Louis met and married a very
pretty and fine lady named Elsie
Basler, and they rented a farmhouse
just outside Arbyrd. It was their
first home -- a small house, to be
sure, but just the right size for
newlyweds. But... then along came
baby... Mattie Grace, a daughter
...and the little farmhouse got kinda'
crowded. Mattie was born in February
of 1922.
- Also, about that same time,
Louis' brother Jim married the pretty
little woman with long blond braids
all the way down her back to her
waist... he'd been eyeing her for some
time... she was the boss' daughter...
Miss Alta May Whitlock, daughter of
George Washington Whitlock and his
wife Dellia Mae Fortner-Whitlock. (The
Whitlock's had a sorghum mill and farm
at Buffalo Island and lived in
Cardwell - Paulding Road. They were
the Bishop brothers' employer at that
time). The story goes that one
afternoon Jim and Alta got a ride over
the bridge of the Saint Francis River
to the west of Cardwell and drove into
a fun little town in Arkansas named
Paragould... went up to the courthouse
in the middle of town and got married!
That was in 1922.
- Well then, Jim and Alta needed a
home so that they didn't have to live
with mamma and papa. So, Louis and
Elsie got up early one fine morn'n and
moved all their worldly possessions
out of that cute little cabin of a
home into a much roomer house. After
all, they were a family of three now.
Later, in that same afternoon, along
came Jim & Alta, with all their
worldly possessions and moved right
in! It was their first home... The
landlord didn't even have to change
the name on the rental agreement... it
was the same family -- the Bishops!
Soon afterwards, Alta and Jim went
shopping and purchased all sorts of
fine oak furniture... especially that
kitchen stuff ... like a new oak hutch
and table and chairs -- all for that
cute little cabin. But, before you
knew it, along came baby... "Wm", a
son ... and the farmhouse got kinda'
crowded. So, like his brother before
him, Jim Bishop had to move on. Jim
and Alta eventually found a nice new
home which was a bit roomier. After
all, they, too, were a family of
three.
