Vivien and Friends, Black River, 1930
  • Dear Kids, Cousins and Friend,

Most of you know how my I LOVE to tell stories about the Missouri Bootheel......well. I have another one! This morning I was watching the Today Show, which is usually prohibited in this house, however:

Matt Lauer was in Cuba. He told of the different famous, or infamous as the case may be, who lived there. One of those people was Earnest Hemmingway. Many years ago my parents, and a lot of other "kids" from the Bootheel, used to enjoying going to Brown's Ferry on the St. Francis River. My Mother told me that Ernest Hemmingway and his wife (who was from Piggott or Paragould, Arkansas) used to come over there and swim. Barbara Beall's Uncle Dick told me it was he who introduced my parents. He also told me my Mother was wearing a bright red Janzen swim suit.

My Mother was a woman before her time as is evident by the attached picture. She is wearing a two piece casual outfit that SHOWED HER BELLY BUTTON! The picture was taken at a picnic on Black River.

    Heavens!
I found this picture in an old scrapbook that belong to her. And her name was Vivien Mattie Hogue Anderson

    Fondly
    bj (AKA Judy)
