Kevin's first birthday Party at age 3 months
  • This is me with my son, John Kevin Bradshaw. He was at his first birthday party at Ladd AFB in Fairbanks, Alaska. We lived in a tiny apartment in Fairbanks - 1440 Lacy Street. It was in top part of a log home owned by Art and Edith Butmann and their daughter, Shirley. The bedroom and living room ceilings sloped so badly we couldn't stand up! Television didn't come on until 4:00 p.m., and then most of the shows were recorded. I remember watching "Name That Tune" which featured Colonel John Glen. I don't think he was a Colonel then - but I remember it. I remember seeing "little" Brenda Lee on television. But the biggest excitement in Fairbanks was when Jack Bailey and "Queen for a Day" was there. I stood outside in the cold - it was -15 or -20 degrees - to watch it. I used to walk from our apartment to downtown Fairbanks - it was so cold when I put my scarf around my neck my glasses froze over!

When Kevin was nine months old we drove BACK down the ALCAN Highway. It was covered with snow. We traveled in a caravan of three cars. Someone in one of the cars started honking their horn. I looked around and saw our trunk had popped open! We stopped, of course, - - all of Kevin's diapers fallen out. Thanks goodness we found them. When we got to the Peace River Bridge we learned the bridge had collapsed. We had to stay overnight in a terrible motel. The next morning we drove about 15 miles on a gravel road until we got to a ferry. The car was loaded onto the ferry - there were three cars on it. The men who "steered" the ferry used long poles to guide it.

It took six days to drive the ALCAN highway. And my husband had NOT repaired the radio in the car before our departure.

When we FINALLY got to Junction City, Kansas, my husband got out of the car and went into a store. As he walked into the store, a dog, which belonged to one of the store owners, came around the corner and bit him........................guess where! We drove all around Junction City trying to find a doctor to get a tetanus shot for him.

We finally made it to Denver, where his sister lived. Then on to Oakley, Kansas to visit his parents. I insisted we drive to Malden where my son was baptized. He was the sixth generation to be baptized in the Methodist Church in Malden. The pastor baptized him with water from the River Jordan.

I guess I've had an adventurous life. When I was working at Concordia Seminary in Clayton, Missouri, one of the Bishops, who was from Texas, came into my office. I told him some stories - about my Alaska adventure and others. He told me I should write a book!

    Thanks
